What Type of Formula Should I Use?

With so many formula options available, it's best to consult your doctor to determine which type is right for your baby.

Avoid homemade formulas. While online recipes may seem healthy and nutritionally complete, they can lack essential nutrients or contain unsafe amounts, potentially leading to serious health issues.

All infant formulas manufactured in the United States—whether name brand, store brand, or generic—must meet strict safety and nutrition guidelines.

Types of Infant Formula

  • Cow’s milk-based formula – The most common type, made from cow’s milk and fortified with iron, which is essential for babies. Always use iron-fortified formula unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Soy-based formula – Used for babies with congenital lactase deficiency or galactosemia. Some parents also choose it to avoid animal protein. Only use iron-fortified soy formula unless directed otherwise by a doctor. However, many babies allergic to cow’s milk protein are also allergic to soy protein, so this formula does not typically help with milk-protein allergies.
  • Hypoallergenic formula – Designed for babies with allergies to cow’s milk or soy proteins. The proteins in these formulas are broken down into smaller components, making them easier to digest.
  • Specialized formula – Created for premature babies with specific nutritional needs.

Always check with your pediatrician before switching formulas to ensure your baby is getting the proper nutrition.
